Propane Safety Reminders for PA & DE Homeowners
Summer is here, grills are firing up, and propane is doing what it does best. Increased use comes with an important reminder: knowing how to handle propane safely matters year-round. June is National Propane Safety Month, and whether you’re a longtime propane customer or relatively new to it, a quick refresher never hurts.
At Ferro Fuel Oil, safety is at the core of everything we do for our customers across Pennsylvania and Delaware. Let’s walk through the essentials.
Know the Smell
Propane gas in its natural state is odorless and colorless. An odorant called ethyl mercaptan is added so you can detect it. The result is a strong, unpleasant smell often compared to rotten eggs or skunk spray. If you ever catch that scent near your tank, appliances, or gas lines, don’t ignore it.
What to Do if You Suspect a Leak
If you smell gas or suspect a propane leak, act quickly and calmly. Here’s what to do:
- NO FLAMES OR SPARKS. Immediately put out all smoking materials and other open flames. Do not operate lights, appliances, telephones, or cell phones.
- LEAVE THE AREA IMMEDIATELY. Get everyone out of the building or area where you suspect gas is leaking.
- SHUT OFF THE GAS. Turn off the main gas supply valve on your propane tank if it is safe to do so.
- REPORT THE LEAK. From a neighbor’s home or other nearby building away from the gas leak, call Ferro Fuel Oil right away. If you can’t reach us, call 911 or your local fire department.
- DO NOT RETURN TO THE BUILDING OR AREA until Ferro Fuel Oil, an emergency responder, or a qualified service technician determines that it is safe to do so.
- GET YOUR SYSTEM CHECKED. Before you attempt to use any of your propane appliances, Ferro Fuel Oil or a qualified service technician must check your entire system to ensure that it is leak-free.

Transporting Propane Cylinders Safely
Summer means cookouts, camping trips, and plenty of reasons to transport a propane cylinder. If you’re loading one into your vehicle, keep these safety tips in mind:
- Always keep the cylinder upright and secured so it can’t tip or roll.
- Make sure the valve is fully closed and, if available, a plug is in place.
- Transport cylinders in a well-ventilated area of your vehicle, like an open truck bed, rather than an enclosed trunk or cabin.
- Never leave a cylinder in a hot car for an extended period, as heat can build pressure inside the tank, posing a safety risk.
