What Does Propane Smell Like?

Propane is a naturally odorless gas; however, odorizers are added to make it more easily detectable. This smell is often described as similar to rotten eggs, skunk spray, or sulfur.

What to Do If You Smell Gas

If you smell gas in your home, follow these steps:

  1. NO FLAMES OR SPARKS. Immediately put out all smoking materials and other open flames. Do not operate lights, appliances, telephones, or cell phones. Flames or sparks from these sources can trigger an explosion or a fire.
  2. LEAVE THE AREA IMMEDIATELY. Get everyone out of the building or area where you suspect gas is leaking.
  3. SHUT OFF THE GAS. Turn off the main gas supply valve on your propane tank if it is safe to do so. To close the valve, turn it to the right (clockwise).
  4. REPORT THE LEAK. From a neighbor’s home or other nearby building away from the gas leak, call your Ferro Fuel Oil right away. If you can’t reach us, call 911 or your local fire department.
  5. DO NOT RETURN TO THE BUILDING OR AREA until your Ferro Fuel Oil, emergency responder, or qualified service technician determines that it is safe to do so.
  6. GET YOUR SYSTEM CHECKED. Before you attempt to use any of your propane appliances, Ferro Fuel Oil or a qualified service technician must check your entire system to ensure that it is leak-free.

How to Prevent a Propane Emergency

The best way to handle a propane emergency is to stop it from happening in the first place. By taking these proactive safety steps, you can protect yourself, your loved ones, and your home.

  • Know Your Tank: Know how to turn off your gas supply and monitor your propane tank levels. Avoid an emergency runout and the hazards that come with it by scheduling a propane delivery when your tank reads no less than 30% full.
  • Educate Your Family: Explain to your family what propane smells like, how to turn off the gas supply, and who to call in the event of an emergency.
  • Maintain Your Appliances: One of the best ways to ensure your propane-powered appliances and heating system are working properly is by scheduling an annual tune-up or maintenance. Ferro Fuel Oil is here to provide boiler, furnace, and water heater maintenance and tune-up services.
